Best Charcoal And Gas Grill Combo

Combo grills are extremely difficult to manufacture and as a result a little more expensive than single-purpose grills, but they do combine the best of both worlds. Think of it as owning a mobile phone with both a touchscreen and a keypad. Now the fact is, most people have difficulty choosing a great charcoal grill or a great new gas grill, a combo grill, however, is a whole different ball game. It could be a nightmare for someone new or indecisive like me! I’ve never actually owned a combo grill but I used my knowledge of grills to choose what I think are the best charcoal and gas combo grills currently available as of 2017.

1. Smoke Hollow 4 in 1 Combo Grill

Smoke Hollow 4-in-1 LP Gas Charcoal Smoker Searing BBQ Grill Model PS9900The Smoke Hollow sets an incredibly high standard in combination grill manufacture, with the 4 in 1. It's a Propane Gas Grill, a Charcoal Grill, a Smoker, and an Infrared Searing Burner. The Infrared side-burner is particularly interesting, because it's made out of ceramics, which is an excellent material for trapping and dispersing heat, so you get some really vibrant flavors There's also 860 square inches of cooking space, with three burners whose output is 30,000 BTU's an hour, and the grates on both the gas grill and the charcoal grill are made from cast iron. Helpfully, they've put individual temperature gauges on each of the cooking stations and these are very easy to read, so you'll know what you're doing all of the time. Where the Smoke Hollow really becomes incredible is when you start experimenting with the dampers and vents. There are so many different grilling options here, with buyers able to make slight adjustments to the air-flow, for a personalized form of grilling, that is second to none. It's solid cast-iron so weighs 168 pounds, but it does have better wheels than most combo grills, so the weight won't be a factor. This is the best charcoal and combo gas grills under $300 available right now.

2. Char-Griller Duo Model 5050

Char-Griller 5050 Duo Gas-and-Charcoal Grill ReviewThe Char-Griller 5050 doesn't smoke, and it doesn't have infrared, which is why it only comes in at number 2; but its sheer size makes it one of the most outstanding grills on the market. Whereas the Smoke Hollow was all intelligent design, the 5050, is a big chunk of muscle, and this is what a lot of combo grill buyers are looking for: size and versatility. The 5050 has 1260 square inches of total cooking space, with huge power, in the form of three main burners putting out 40,800 BTU's an hour, and there's a side-burner too, giving you an extra 12,000 BTU's an hour. If your reading this and you have a large family, the size alone would make this the best combo grill for you, because the taste is equal to the Smoke Hollow, due to the inclusion of some glorious cast-iron grates. The Smoke Hollow was just a little more special, with its Infrared ceramics option, and the excellent temperature control. Char-griller opted for adjustable grates as a means of controlling temperature, and it works well, although this method is never as good in practice as vents and dampers. Tiny margins like this kept what is an extremely impressive grill, in the number 2 spot. Read Full Review...

3. Char-Broil Gas2Coal 3-Burner Gas and Charcoal Grill

Char-Broil Gas2Coal 3-Burner Gas and Charcoal Grill ReviewThe people at char-broil have been really trying to create the perfect combo grill. There are have been many iterations and a lot of hits and misses, but as far as I am concerned, the Gas2Coal hybrid grill is the best of the these. I have no complaints with the gas grill and side burner parts of this grill, the only caveat is the charcoal aspect which takes a long time to light. Having said that, the overall build quality is excellent and it is still much cheaper than the first two models on this list. Do check it out or Read Full Review...

4. Dyna-Glo DGB730SNB-D Duel Fuel Grill

Dyna-Glo DGB730SNB-D Dual Fuel Grill ReviewThe Dyna-Glo is cheaper than the other grills on this list, so you won't be disappointed by the price. Something else you won't be disappointed by is the taste; but there's a constant reminder that while it's good, it could so easily have been one of the greats. First the positives: it has commercial grade burners, supreme cast-iron grates, 940 square inches of cooking space, big shelves for storage, and lots of room to not only grill but also to prepare food. It's well-built, excellently designed and very durable, so the Dyna-Glo will last a long time. Up to this point, it's actually the best grill on the list, but the reason for its number four entry is in the finer details. 24,000 BTU is a little low, even with beautiful cast-iron grates, for a 940 square inch heating surface, so what you'll get is slower cooking time. And, the charcoal tray adjustment system you use for temperature control, is just not good enough. You're going to be able to grill incredible meats on this, especially using the gas grill, because the commercial grade burners are restaurant standard, but some more power and better temperature control would have sent the Duel Fuel into orbit. Read Full Review...

5. Char-Broil Gas and Charcoal Combo Grill, Deluxe

Char-Broil Gas & Charcoal Combo Grill ReviewAt 505 square inches, it's the smallest grill on the list, but it's also the fastest. They've put in three excellent burners whose output totals 36,000 BTU's an hour, and the cast-iron grates enable heat to disperse quickly throughout the surface, so the max temperature can be reached in good time. The charcoal side is slower, but still heats up in about the same time as the other grills listed, and you get a more moist flavor from meats than on the gas side. It's this quality imbalance from charcoal to gas, that stops the Char-Broil Deluxe from climbing higher, but if you're using it solely for gas grilling, and you want fast food, it's awesome. Interestingly, the ash-catcher on the Deluxe is really good and will enable an easier cleaning process than is available on most grills. There's also a very much simplified assembly, so whereas you'll be looking at close to an hour on the other grills here, it's more like 30 minutes with the Deluxe. Read Full Review...
