Tomato Paste: Tips for Saving Leftover Paste

Are you tired of putting a partially used can of tomato paste in the fridge, only to pull it out later and find its all rusty inside and the tomato paste is unusable?

OK, that was a trick question. You don’t ever want to save any food in a can in the refrigerator. It is not only not healthy, but it could also be very dangerous. If you plan on using the tomato paste in the next few days, you can simply transfer the contents of the can into a seal-able plastic container, however, if you’re not sure when you’ll want to use it, freezing is your best option.

Here’s a simple technique you can use:  Simply spoon out a one tablespoon blob of the tomato paste. Put it on a plate covered with parchment paper. Add as many one tablespoon blogs of tomato paste that will fit on the plate, separated to make it easier to remove them. Place it in the freezer until the paste is frozen solid, then remove each frozen serving from the parchment paper and place them in a marked freezer bag or container.  By freezing them first as individual tablespoon serving sizes, they won’t stick together when you place them together in a freezer container.

When you need a small amount of tomato paste next time, just take out the number of tablespoons you need and add them to your dish.

Having said all that, you can also use tomato paste from a tube, as shown in the picture. The problem is not all local grocery stores stock this item. Or, if they do carry it, they may not restock it as quickly as some other items. If this is the circumstance you find yourself in, you can use the tips above, or you can find the tubes of tomato paste online.
