Dear Sugar, Its Over!



    This might be a letter you would write when you decide to lose weight once and for all.

    Dear Sugar,

    I don’t know how to break this to you, so like a bandaid that has to come off – I’ll try to be quick and painless.

    You’ve gotta go! Ouch!

    There, I said it – I’ve known it for a long time – but now I’ve finally said it out loud!


    I know you’ve been a part of all the very best times in my life – from vacations to celebrations – and I’ve loved you for that.  You’ve also been there during the worst of times – from funerals to break-ups – and I’ve loved you for that too!  And then you’ve been there for every ho-hum, doldrum, boring moment and I’ve loved you for that! No doubt about it, you’ve been my “go-to” guy.

    Here’s the problem. You’ve done me wrong!  I’d seen signs of it for a long time, but quite honestly, by then I was already addicted to you.

    Now it’s time to put my big girl panties on – and thanks to you, they really are “big girl” panties – and kick you to the curb.

    I’ll bet you didn’t see that coming, did you?

    You thought you could use me and abuse me and I’d keep coming back for more. I understand why you thought that – it’s how it’s always been.

    I’ve loved you! Seriously loved YOU!  But I didn’t really know You, did I?  I didn’t know how insidiously sneaky you are!

    It’s true, there were signs, but I chose to ignore them.

    • I packed on the pounds, but I didn’t blame you, I blamed Fat, and you were only too happy to have me do that!
    • I saw you strike members of my own family with diabetes, but I choose to believe it was because they’d abused YOU.
    • You gave me some of my best highs (and in those moments I really, really loved you), but then you sent me crashing (time and again).

    I’m not proud to say it, but each time you abused me, I came back for more.  I choose to focus on the good times, instead of the bad times.

    Then I started seeing you pop up in the news. Ohhh it got BAD.  You were all over the place and headlines blared.

    • Sugar can suppress the immune system.
    • Sugar upsets the mineral relationships in the body.
    • Sugar can cause hyperactivity, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, and crankiness in children.
    • Sugar can produce a significant rise in triglycerides.
    • Sugar contributes to the reduction in defense against bacterial infection (infectious diseases).
    • Sugar causes a loss of tissue elasticity and function, the more sugar you eat, the more elasticity and function you lose.
    • Sugar reduces high-density lipoproteins.
    • Sugar leads to chromium deficiency.
    • Sugar leads to cancer of the breast, ovaries, prostate, and rectum.
    • Sugar can increase fasting levels of glucose (I saw that on my own glucose tests just last week you really kicked me in the gut with that one, Sugar!)

    Need I go on?  There’s more. you know lots more!

    • Sugar causes copper deficiency.
    • Sugar interferes with the absorption of calcium and magnesium. In addition, sugar needs calcium to be metabolized and reportedly draws the required amounts from teeth and bones if these are not provided via food containing bioavailable calcium.
    • Sugar can weaken eyesight.
    • Sugar raises the level of a neurotransmitter: dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine.
    • Sugar can cause hypoglycemia.
    • Sugar can produce an acidic digestive tract.
    • Sugar can cause a rapid rise of adrenaline levels in children.
    • Sugar malabsorption is frequent in patients with functional bowel disease.
    • Sugar can cause premature aging.
    • Sugar can lead to alcoholism.

    So, Sugar, you might be wondering why I feel the need to air our dirty laundry in such a public place.  It’s not because I don’t love you, because I do. Maybe I always will but its time to tell my story. Its time to face the facts. Its time to step up and say I won’t be abused any longer.

    There won’t be any more early morning sweet treats or late night binges in bed. No more non-fat Mochas or chocolatey treasures.  No more one o’clock, two o’clock, three o’clock SNACK four o’clock, five o’clock, six o’clock SNACK- were gonna SNACK, SNACK, SNACK around the clock tonight. Are your toes tapping?  I know it was our song, wasn’t it!

    I’m anticipating it will be hard in the beginning, but I’ll survive, and then I’ll THRIVE!

    And so, my old friend, I wish I could bless you and wish you well as I’ve done with every old boyfriend that’s come and gone out of my life but alas, I cannot.  You are harmful to everyone you touch, so I wish you nothing but goodbye. Go away. Be gone.
